from bud to seed

I find myself preferring the image of the dying rose over the one of the newly opened bud. how about you?

I'm learning the teeniest bit about roses, now that I have adopted the care of three bushes of them. I still have no idea what kind we have or just what I ought to do to (for?) them to make them thrive.

And now I know what rose hips are. They are the seed pods that develop after the petals fall off, and they are useful for all sorts of things like jellies and teas and medicines and such.

If I invite you over for rose hip tea, however, you'd be wise to decline. Too much snail poison floating around.

Does anyone else see the leaping dancer in that last shot?

I definitely see it - though I may not have if you hadn't pointed it out.

I like the budding rose, myself.

Ask your mother-in-law about the care of roses. Bet she'd know! I'm sure you'll take great care of them - you do well at anything you learn and put your mind to. :)

I have had so much fun learning about roses and all of our other plants since we bought our house. :-) I transplanted one right before I left for a month, and I am so excited to see how it's grown while I've been away! :-) And yes, I think a dying rose is equally beautiful to a fresh, innocent one. :-)

I agree--the dying rose is so much more beautiful. I wonder why that is . . . something deep is there, but I can't put my finger on it.

glad I'm not the only one seeing leaping dancers in my dead flowers!!

Vicki…I'll have to pick her brain when we see her in a few weeks. I'm sure she'll have some good ideas.

Jenny…I'm hoping for some success stories to share!

Jenna…"something deep is there…"…I think you're right! I'm always drawn to the beauty of dying things…perhaps one day I'll figure it out and write it all down…

Yes!, I see the leaping dancer too. Don't know if I know all that much about roses. I do know they take a lot of care. Our first house had lots of them and I think I killed them all. LOL! Maybe your Mom knows about them. She seems to love gardening. See you soon.

I think many people prefer to look at a dying flower because in it they see the beauty of being imperfect. It is not until we get older and loose the idealism of our youth that we understand that life cannot be perfect. No matter how hard you try. I think I find the dying flower more appealing now as I am getting older. As a child I would have picked the rose in full bloom. Now, I see profound beauty in the bright eyes of an elderly woman or man. Something that youth probably misses.
ps yes I see the dancer

I wanted to tell you to look at this blog. She is a wonder writer who lost her teenage son in an accident 4 years ago and she posted a similar blog last week.
